  2. What is Bricklayer for Windows ?
  3. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
  4. Bricklayer for Windows is a port of Steve Chamberlin's popular fast-paced
  5. falling blocks game for the Macintosh.  The Macintosh version was honorably 
  6. mentioned in the 1993 MacUser Shareware Awards, and favorably reviewed in 
  7. numerous books and magazines.  Guaranteed to get you addicted, Bricklayer 
  8. for Windows features beautiful 256-color artwork, an original music 
  9. soundtrack, terrific sound effects, and more.  Systems which are not 
  10. 256-color or sound-capable are also supported.

  13. System Requirements

  15. Bricklayer has been beta tested on i386, i486, and Pentium systems with
  16. 4-8MB of memory.  The memory requirements may be quite steep because 
  17. Bricklayer needs to load close to 1MB of music files.  To enjoy the
  18. background music and sound effects, you will need to have a sound card
  19. with wave playing ability supported by Windows (such as Microsoft Sound
  20. System, or Creative Labs Sound Blaster).  If you cannot make Bricklayer 
  21. even start up, try creating a file called BRICKLYR.INI in your WINDOWS 
  22. directory and putting the following lines there:

  27. This will force Bricklayer to ignore the music and sound settings and
  28. not load any music files.  You will be able to play, but will have no
  29. music or sound effects.

  32. Background Music

  34. This version of Bricklayer, 1.00, uses the Microsoft WAVEMIX.DLL sound 
  35. mixing library.  You may notice that the background music has stopped 
  36. playing after six or seven minutes (in rare instances, even less) of 
  37. continuous music.  If this occurs, press the <TAB> key to restart the 
  38. music.

  40. For those systems which are not sound capable, unselecting the 
  41. "Load Music" check box in the preferences dialog will prevent Bricklayer
  42. from loading the music files and speed up load time.

  44. The music WAV files are Copyright Opinicus Microtechnologies, and may 
  45. be freely distributed only as part of the Bricklayer for Windows game 
  46. for use by the Bricklayer executable.  See the distribution information

  63. versions).  If you enjoy Bricklayer and play it often, PLEASE send in the 
  64. $10 shareware fee.  It is not very much compared to the cost of a commercial 
  65. game, and it motivates me to keep improving Bricklayer as well as to work on 
  66. new games.  If you play, please pay.  Upgrades to new versions of Bricklayer 
  67. are always free for registered users.  Those who register will also be kept 
  68. informed of new version releases, as well as the releases of any new 
  69. products.

  85. Controls

  87. Keyboard control is customizable with the Change Keys... menu item.
  88. The numeric keypad keys are active as control keys in addition to any
  89. user-selectable settings.  The default user-selectable keyboard settings
  90. are the 'j', 'k', and 'l' keys for left, rotate, and right motion, and 
  91. the spacebar for the drop.  The 'a' key controls the push.
  92. On the numeric keypad, the 4, 5, 6, and 0 act the same as the 
  93. j, k, l, and space.
